India’s young Test skipper, Shubman Gill, made history by becoming just the second Indian and only the ninth player overall to register both a double century and a century in the same Test match. The 25-year-old did so in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Gill, having already smashed his biggest Test score of 269 in the first innings, added a century in the second as well. With this, he broke the old record of great Sunil Gavaskar's 344 runs against the West Indies in 1971 with 369* runs from just a single match. In his debut series as captain, he now has three centuries in four innings. With this match, Gill becomes part of a highly exclusive list of only nine Test batters to achieve a double hundred and a ton in the same game. He is the second Indian to do so after Gavaskar. He also becomes the second captain to do so in England, preceded by Graham Gooch's legendary performance against India at Lord's in 1990. Gill shared the crease with Rishabh Pant (55) on Day 4, and together they contributed 110 off 103 balls. Later, the right-hander forged a 68-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja as India's top man crossed 480. His hundred in the second innings was off 129 deliveries and contained nine fours and three sixes.
