Shubman Gill replacing Rohit Sharma as India's ODI captain that's the biggest update from the team for the Australia series. That 'c' in the name next to Gill's has got everyone swooning over Rohit's legacy and discussing the future of ODI cricket with a new captain in charge before the 2027 Cricket World Cup. The focus was shifted on Gill and Rohit, so no one caught 'vice-captain' written alongside Shreyas Iyer's name. The middle-order batsman has been given a promotion. Some would term it as karma. Shreyas wasn't selected in India's team for the 2025 T20 Asia Cup and now, he has been rewarded by being appointed deputy to Gill. But there's plenty more to this. Shreyas has been projected as an India captaincy prospect for years. We saw him captain the Delhi Capitals at the age of just 24 and guide them into their first Indian Premier League (IPL) final in 2020. Injuries waylaid him for a bit, but then he captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to their second IPL crown in 2024. This season, he led Punjab Kings to their second IPL final. Shreyas' tactical sense and pressure-handling skills are well-respected. He has been also leading India A in a 3-match one-day series against Australia A. You could term this as a long time in coming. But what does this do to KL Rahul? The wicketkeeper batter was made Rohit's deputy when Virat Kohli was replaced as India's ODI skipper in November 2021. He spelled him in whenever he was required. With the emergence of Shubman Gill, he relinquished the deputy job. The decision makes sense now as Gill is now India's ODI and Test captain. But why has Rahul been replaced? He's India's most experienced batter in Test cricket and even captained in South Africa recently in Rohit's absence, but Ravindra Jadeja was appointed deputy to Gill for the West Indies home Test series. Even in ODIs, after Rohit and Kohli, Rahul is India's most experienced batter. Although Shreyas isn’t exactly young, as he’ll turn 31 in December, Rahul is two years his senior. Moreover, Rahul hasn’t really done well as captain in the IPL, while Shreyas has succeeded with three teams already. It’s safe to assume that this is the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) way of saying they are looking at the future.
