Shreyas Iyer put up an amazing performance in ODI World Cup 2023, scoring 530 runs in 11 games at an average of 66.25 and a strike rate of 113.24, but since then, things haven't gone well for him. There had been quite some struggle with form, back injury, and then there came dropping from the BCCI central contract list as well after he opted out of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy game. Iyer had been hoping that good play in the Duleep Trophy 2024 might get him back to the Indian Test team but his play in two games for India D was far from that which he had wanted. That also reduced the chances of a Test comeback now seem very low. A BCCI official told The Telegraph that there is no spot for Shreyas Iyer in the Test team right now, and he’s not expected to travel with the Indian team to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting on November 22 in Perth. “At the moment, there’s no room for Shreyas to be in the Test team. Who will he replace? Besides, his shot selection has been a concern in Duleep, especially yesterday (Sunday). He was well set and then suddenly played such a shot (off left-arm spinner Shams Mulani). When you are set and then batting on a flat deck, you need to make the best use of that opportunity,” he said “Shreyas could be there (in the Mumbai squad) for the Irani Cup (beginning on October 1 in Lucknow). Even if he’s picked for the Bangladesh T20Is (from October 6), he still might play Irani and then be available from the second T20I onwards" Also Read | Watch: Virat Kohli Capturing Moments with Fans and Net Bowlers in Chennai “Now, if he doesn’t fire in Irani too, he still has the Ranji Trophy to get runs. It wasn’t too many days ago when he was batting so well in last year’s ODI World Cup. He suffered an injury too, which needs to be considered,” said another Board official. “Also, with still one round left in Duleep, you never know he might score a hundred. He needs to regain form. Most likely he won’t go to Australia for his problems against the short ball, but one can’t just ignore his runs at home.” This Ind vs Ban test, will be the inaugural Test of India under Gambhir and his new coaching staff. Though it will be an interesting test how Rohit's team performs against Bangladesh, who are more confident after beating Pakistan 2-0 in the series. The two-match series is a big opportunity for India in terms of WTC points. After that, they will be part of a 10-match Test season involving a three-Test contest at home against New Zealand and the five-match Border-Gavaskar series in Australia later this year. India is at the top of the WTC table with 68.52 percentage points while Australia follows very close behind with 62.50 percentage points.
