Social media is up in arms over Shreyas Iyer being overlooked for a spot in India's Test squad for the upcoming tour of England, with many people putting out his impressive stats. He has made a great impression in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Champions Trophy, and now IPL, there is no arguing that Shreyas has had a great last nine months. There is no doubting he has been in good form. But if you take a look there are actually four of these five tournaments listed above that are all white-ball tournaments. And people are trying to use his limited overs form to suggest he be considered for a Test match, which is the longest and hardest format! This is a perfect example of recency bias. And recency bias should not be considered when forming opinions. Just because Shreyas has done well in the IPL and helped Punjab Kings to their first playoffs in 10 years it certainly does not mean he is a lock for England in red-ball cricket. He had a good Ranji season 480 runs at an average of 68.57 in seven innings, with a double century. But let's look a little closer. Those two big scores, 142 and 233, came against Maharashtra and Odisha, who are not exactly the strongest teams. Remove those scores and he had only 105 runs in five innings. This goes to show, he has not had consistent performances against better opposition even in domestic red-ball cricket. And it is important to remember that while the Ranji Trophy is high pressure, it doesn't compare to Test cricket. There are other considerations at play. We don’t know how his red-ball skills transfer to overseas conditions. The selectors were not quite convinced he could deal with the swinging ball in England or that he could resist the temptation to play at deliveries which is a massive no-no in English Tests. Also, consider the competition. Karun Nair earned his place with 863 runs. There’s Sarfaraz Khan who was selected earlier to go to Australia, and he (and Shreyas) did not go to England. So why is Shreyas get a free pass ahead of them?
