Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer and Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya have both been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 held in Ahmedabad on June 1. The match, which began late due to unexpected rain after the toss, was already operating under revised playing conditions that allowed a two-hour extension to complete a full game. However, both teams exceeded the time limit further due to sluggish over-rates. This marked Punjab Kings’ second such offence this season, resulting in an INR 24 lakh fine for Iyer. In contrast, this was the third offence for the Mumbai Indians, leading to a heavier INR 30 lakh penalty for Hardik Pandya. Other PBKS players were each fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever was lower, while MI players were fined INR 12 lakh or 50% of their match fee, whichever was less. Interestingly, despite MI breaching the over-rate rule for the third time this season, Hardik avoided suspension. A rule amendment introduced ahead of IPL 2025 removed the automatic suspension clause that previously saw the MI captain miss the opening fixture this year due to a similar offence in IPL 2024. Shreyas Iyer’s heroics dump Mumbai out of IPL 2025 Despite the fine, Shreyas Iyer stole the show on the night with a spectacular unbeaten 87 off just 41 balls. His performance was instrumental in Punjab Kings chasing down Mumbai’s 203/6 with an over to spare. The five-wicket victory saw PBKS book a place in the IPL 2025 final. However, their bowlers couldn’t contain a rampant PBKS batting unit led by Iyer and supported by Nehal Wadhera (48 off 29) and Josh Inglis (38 off 21).
