The India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is not just winning matches but hearts, as he did by gifting a new pair of shoes to a local fielder, Jaskiran Singh, on Friday, February 28. It was Shreyas Iyer who approached Singh and had some words before asking the latter's shoe size, and handing him a new pair of shoes. Jaskiran Singh is a full-time chatered accountant and a cricket passionate who is a part-time spinner. Jaskiran served as a net bowler for Pakistan and Bangladesh in Dubai. However, he couldn't bowl for India since their allocated slots for spinners were already filled. And even now, he is yet to get a chance to bowl the Indians at the net. He, however, has been with the team while fielding. Speaking about Shreyas Iyer’s gift, he showed the newly received boot from Iyer to the news agency Press Trust of India and recalled that moment on the field. He said, "Paaji kya haal-chaal, sab badiya? (Brother how are you? Everything fine?"). Shreyas bhai came up to me and asked 'what's your show size'? I said 10, and then he said I've got something for you and he gave me these spikes. It really means a lot." The young spinner highlighted Shreyas’ importance in India's batting lineup, especially in handling middle-order responsibilities. He said, "I am a part of the ICC net bowling team for the Champions Trophy. Today was one such special moment of my life. Received these spikes from Shreyas Iyer. In this tournament, I've fielded for them (India) but was waiting for an opportunity to bowl to them. I've bowled to Pakistan and Bangladesh; that was a really good experience. And then this, coming from Shreyas Bhai means a lot. The team relies on him in the event of a top-order collapse. This really means a lot and the day was special today.” Beyond cricketing skills, Jaskiran praised Shreyas’ lively presence during training sessions, noting his enthusiasm and encouragement on the field. He added, "Every batter in Team India is special, but someone whom I look up to is Rishabh Pant because he is a lefty and due to the natural angle, the ball will go away from him. So, I would really love to bowl to him. We have been with Team India since the first session, and today is the fourth. Shreyas bhai is really joyful around the field and every time the ball comes to me, he's like 'catch it'." Notably, India will play their final group stage match at Dubai against New Zealand on March 2, having said that both teams have qualified for the semis.
