Shreyas Iyer has already proven his place, if not cemented at number 4, and now he is aiming to try his hands again in his age-old spot number 3. The middle-order batter, who has been phenomenal in the recently concluded 2025 Champions Trophy, has been overlooked for a long time in the T20 Internations. Having Virat Kohli retired in the format, Iyer eyes that spot, hoping Punjab Kings as the major window for the opportunity. However, he clarifies that all depends on the team's head coach, Ricky Ponting. Recently, the Punjab captain spoke to the press, where he expressed his urge to get back to his previous position. He said, "We already know that IPL is an integral part of Indian cricket. And If I would want to mark myself at some position in T20, it would be number 3. And that's what I'm focusing at. I wouldn't say that we are planning and thinking about what number I will be batting. This time I'm quite clear about that position. And I'm going to be focusing on that number. As long as coach approves of me." Shreyas Iyer has batted at Number 3 in 19 T20Is for India, where he scored 530 runs, having decent impact. However, with the new rookie Tilak Varma walking in at 3, and the kind of form he is in right now, it will indeed be a tough job for Iyer.
