There was a time when Yuzvendra Chahal used to be among the much sought-after match-winning bowlers in the IPL, but these days he is not even called upon to bowl the full quota, especially in big grounds such as Mullanpur Stadium. Punjab Kings (PBKS) forked out a whopping INR 18 crores for him, but that has not quite been the return on investment. RR was off to a flying start in its first home encounter with PBKS of IPL 2025. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson went to town on the pace attack. Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, Marcus Stoinis all took the pounding before Shreyas Iyer brought Chahal into play. RR had begun to slow down a little by that time. Chahal chose not to attack and bowled more defensively. Many of his deliveries were drifting down the leg. Though when batters tended to take him on, Chahal was the one to be feared; when they just worked him around, things got pretty tough for him. His second over began with five wides down the leg side, and despite a couple of floaters, he hardly made an impact. Eventually, he did not even complete his four-over quota. Iyer rather turned to Stoinis instead to whom 48 runs came. Chahal's economy was 10.70. Worse bowling average in last 12 months ft. Among all bowlers who have taken at least ten wickets in the past twelve months, Chahal's average of 45.61 is the worst. Chahal has taken only 13 wickets in his last 15 IPL appearances, at an economy rate of 10.22. To compare, from 2020 to 2023, he had this golden run, taking home 87 wickets at a phenomenal average of 19.97, which is a huge contrast. PBKS will hope he finds his form soon. The team is looking to finish in the top four for the playoffs, with huge-ticket players like Shreyas Iyer and Arshdeep Singh in great form. Now, it is time for Chahal to rise to the occasion.
