Shreyas Iyer's move to go on a 6-month red-ball cricket break can be a grave decision. The Mumbai batter has been facing back spasms and stiffness since his surgery and requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a break from the longest format of the game. It's necessary to prioritize one's fitness, given the average duration of a cricketer's career. But Shreyas may have to cope with the hassle that it'll generate. The last time he was dealing with back problems, the BCCI had removed him from their 2023-24 central contracts. Granted, he hadn't spoken to BCCI before opting to miss a couple of Ranji Trophy matches, but those were the repercussions of Shreyas' behavior. And he had to earn it ages ago. Which he did and was added to the 2024-25 contracts. But this decision to take a 6-month break could have a similar effect. Shreyas may not be axed from BCCI’s 2025-26 central contracts but might suffer a demotion. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra highlights how, despite showing promise, Shreyas isn’t anywhere close to the T20I or Test team. But excluding himself from red-ball cricket, Shreyas could be reduced to Grade C, INR 1 crore per year, in BCCI central contracts. One must also keep in mind that within the next six months, many of those players could surpass Shreyas as prospects to claim the middle-order slot available in India's Test side. Others will be given preference if they're rewarded with caps in Test cricket. The rest of the players he has included with him in Grade B are Suryakumar Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Except for Suryakumar, who is India's T20I captain, the rest are all-format players. Shreyas isn't. It won't be surprising, as Aakash forecasts that he can be relegated in the BCCI central contracts.
