Shohely Akhter, the right-arm off spinner of Bangladesh, became the first woman cricket player to receive a ban from ICC for corrupt activity. The 36-year-old was found guilty of attempted fixing of matches during the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup, and she has been slapped with a five-year suspension as a punishment. Shohely has played two ODIs and 13 T20Is for Bangladesh but was not in the squad for the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa. She admitted to breaching five provisions of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code regarding corrupt approaches during the tournament, and her ban becomes effective from February 10, 2025. According to the investigation of Shohely's conversation with another cricketer by ICC's anti-corruption unit, it was found that, Shohely reached out to a teammate referred to as 'Player A' before the Bangladesh game against Australia in an attempt to persuade her to fix the game. In that conversation, Shohely said that her "cousin," who allegedly bets on cricket through his telephone, was asking if the player would agree to be dismissed by hit wicket against Australia. If the player would agree, Shohely said that, she would get 2 million Bangladeshi Takas (USD 16,400), money that supposedly derived from her cousin's betting. The player rejected the offer and immediately reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). She also managed to record conversations although Shohely deleted them on her own device.
