A bizarre incident occurred at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office in Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where a 40-year-old security official was found stealing 261 IPL 2025 jerseys. The IPL 2025 jerseys, which are valued at around 6.5 lakh rupees, were found to be missing after an internal audit indicated a shortage. Farooque Aslam Khan, The jailed guard, removed the jerseys from the storeroom on June 13. Each of the jerseys is worth approximately INR 2,500. According to the police, Khan confessed to stealing the jerseys to support his online gambling addiction. The jerseys were of various IPL teams, but still, it is not certain whether they were for the players or for sale to the fans. Khan had sold the jerseys to a Haryana-based online dealer, with whom he was in touch over social media. The dealer received the jerseys through courier, said police. A police officer said: "The guard claims he haggled a bit with the online dealer, but he hasn't yet specified how much he got for the deal." The guard had told the man in Haryana that the jerseys were part of a stock clearance sale due to renovation work that was going on at the office." Out of 261 jerseys that were stolen from the office of BCCI in Mumbai, 50 have been recovered to date. Khan's money was deposited directly into his account. "He [the guard] claims he lost it all to online gambling," the source said. Police are now verifying his bank statements to validate his claims. A complaint regarding the theft was lodged formally by a BCCI official at Marine Drive Police Station on July 17. Investigations are being carried out to track the remaining stolen jerseys and establish the role of the dealer in the case.
