Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan has shared his thoughts on the ongoing issue regarding Lucknow Super Giants’ leg-spinner Digvesh Rathi and his exuberant “Notebook” celebration in IPL 2025. He also commented on the BCCI's ruling that suspended Rathi for one match for his overzealousness on the field. On Tuesday, May 21, Rathi was hit with a one-match ban from the BCCI for continuously using the "Notebook" celebration. Dhawan has voiced that the young spinner is facing a steep learning curve as he develops into a better player at the highest level. Rathi was repeatedly warned and fined for his animated celebrations in games against Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians. Rathi received three demerit points and fines but continued to display his animated gesture. Things came to a head when LSG played the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and after dismissing Abhishek Sharma, Rathi waved him off with the notebook gesture again, which ignited a bigger altercation on the field. Sometimes, learning the hard way is the only way the lesson sticks. Hopefully, this will be a turning point where Rathi learns to channel that fire more constructively and show the respect every player deserves on the field. — Shikhar Dhawan (@SDhawan25) May 20, 2025 The confrontation ended with penalties for both players. Sharma was fined 25% of his match fee and was awarded a demerit point, whereas Rathi was suspended for a match, after reaching five demerit points. Sharing his views on the incident, Dhawan stated how a difficult moment like this could allow one to grow on a personal level. He hoped Rathi would use this chance to channel his energy in a more respectful and controlled manner on the field. This year on an Under Sky season has been terrible for LSG. However, the bright spot has been Rathi. The youngster of 25 has picked up 14 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 8.18. LSG is already out of the race for the playoffs and will be playing their last rendered against Gujarat Titans on May 22 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 27. His first breach came after he dismissed Punjab Kings' Priyansh Arya and celebrated with a mocking notebook gesture, which cost him 25% of his match fee, an amount of roughly INR 1.87 lakh, and one demerit point. After three days, after bowling out Naman Dhir of Mumbai Indians, Rathi repeated the gesture once more, fined this time for half the amount and given two more demerit points. Undeterred, he once again copy-pasted the gesture towards Abhishek Sharma, which brought with it his suspension. Such instances of repeated behavior have caused concerns regarding discipline and fair play in the IPL.
