Cricket Victoria and St Kilda Cricket Club have named one of the heritage-listed grandstands at Junction Oval in Melbourne after the late Shane Warne in recognition of the great contribution he made to Victoria and his club team, St Kilda. This stand has been in existence since 1925 and was originally named after Australian rules footballer Kevin Murray. Renaming the stand had begun before the death of Warne in March 2022. Murray, a proponent of the name change, now has his own stand at Brunswick Street Oval in Fitzroy, Melbourne. In fact, the MCG named its southern stand in honor of the great player during his state funeral in 2022. However, renaming the heritage-listed stand on the western side of Junction Oval in St Kilda took a bit more time. The unveiled ceremony was attended by Keith, the father of Warne and sisters Summer and Brooke. This took place ahead of the One-Day Cup match between Victoria and New South Wales at the Junction Oval. Australia Test captain Pat Cummins and some players including Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell witnessed the ceremony before they participated in the game. Some former teammates who played for Australia, Victoria, and St Kilda were also present. Featuring memorabilia from Warne's career-most of it courtesy his father-the exhibition is free for visitors. At the unveiling, Keith Warne said: "Today marks a very special and proud day for the Warne family to have a stand named the Shane Warne stand here at the Junction Oval is a wonderful tribute to Shane, who we know would be honored to be chosen for such an accolade." He added: "In February 1991 he made his first-class debut playing for Victoria against Western Australia here at the Junction Oval. Some of Shane's most enjoyable early cricketing years were whilst playing with his beloved St Kilda, especially when the matches were played here at the Junction Oval. As proud as Shane would be to know a stand at the Junction Oval bares his name, he would also be thrilled to know that he will now be forever linked with St Kilda Cricket Club and the Junction Oval. On behalf of his family, I'd like to thank Cricket Victoria and St Kilda Cricket Club for their support in honouring Shane with such a wonderful tribute, further enhancing Shane's incredible legacy."
