The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not given fitness clearance to Mohammed Shami, which precisely indicates that his traveling to Australia is still unknown. Earlier, it was speculated that he may join the team for the last three Tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, but things are looking uncertain now. BCCI, reportedly has kept Shami's visa and clothing ready. They will send him off as early as possible once he is declared fit. India had won the first Test at Perth but is visibly struggling in Adelaide as their third pacer, Harshit Rana, turned out to be expensive on Day 2. Speaking about Shami's fitness, a BCCI official said, “The selection committee is waiting for the NCA’s fitness clearance report on Shami. He travelled to Bengaluru to give a fitness test. He played the Ranji Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, where he looked good. His kit is also ready. We are just waiting for the approval from the NCA." Shami has made a comeback in competitive cricket after getting included in the Ranji Trophy. He was later included in the Bengal team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. He finished the tournament scalping eight wickets in seven games. A team from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), including a national selector (SS Das), sports science head (Nitin Patel), and a strength and conditioning trainer (Nishanta Bardule), recently monitored him during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) in Rajkot. Despite his absence impacting the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), Shami is unlikely to join the Australian tour soon. Optimistically, he could be available for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, but sources suggest this might be overly hopeful, and he may not travel at all. Meanwhile, Shami continues with the Bengal team, which has reached the SMAT knockouts. He is expected to play in the pre-quarterfinals against Chandigarh on November 9 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Notably, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him for a decent price of INR 10 crore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
