The notorious IPL 2008 "slapgate" scandal between Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth has surfaced again after past IPL chairman Lalit Modi released the 17-year-old video during a podcast session with former Australian skipper Michael Clarke. The incident, which took place during a match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in Mohali in IPL 2008 shocked cricket fans back then as visuals showed Sreesanth in tears after Punjab’s win. It was later revealed that Mumbai’s stand-in skipper Harbhajan Singh had slapped him, leading to the premier spinner being banned for 11 matches and missing the rest of the tournament. The famous slap in my podcast with @MClarke23 on #beyond23 - part 3 of my podcast. I love @harbhajan_singh - but after 17 years it was time to reveal it. Lots and lots more to reveal but that will now only be in the movie that’s in the works supervised by @SnehaRajani on my… pic.twitter.com/EhPaIRAZ0F — Lalit Kumar Modi (@LalitKModi) August 29, 2025 Both Harbhajan and Sreesanth have since made amends publicly over the years, saying that they are on good terms now. But the move to release the video after all these years has not been welcomed by Sreesanth's family. She wrote: "Shame on you Lalit Modi and Michael Clarke. You people are not even human to drag up something from 2008 just for your own cheap publicity and views. Both Sreesanth and Harbhajan have long moved on, they are fathers now with school-going children, and yet you try to throw them back into an old wound. Absolutely disgusting, heartless, and inhuman." She further added: "Sreesanth has rebuilt his life with dignity and grace after every hardship he faced. As his wife, and as the mother of his children, it is deeply painful for our family to see this resurface after 18 long years. Families are being forced to relive trauma that was buried decades ago only so you can chase views. This doesn’t just hurt the players, it scars their innocent children who now have to face questions and shame for no fault of theirs. You should be sued for doing something so cheap and inhumane." During an interview with Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan narrated a poignant incident concerning Sreesanth's daughter. Harbhajan said: "One thing I’d want to change in my life is that incident with Sreesanth. I want to remove that incident from my career. I apologised 200 times… What hurt me even after many years was when I met his daughter and she said, ‘I don’t want to talk to you. You hit my father.’ My heart was shattered." He added: “I wish when she grows up, she doesn’t see me in the same light. That’s why I want to remove that chapter.” This scandal, which was rated among IPL's worst moments, is again in the news, but the two families involved have indicated that they wish to put the incident behind them.
