As Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) gear up to open the eighteenth season of the IPL, it's a perfect time to revisit one of the most heated incidents involving their larger-than-life owner, Shah Rukh Khan. The Bollywood superstar, known for his charm, wit, and flamboyance, has always been a passionate supporter of his team. But back in 2012, his fiery temper landed him in trouble, leading to a five-year ban from Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium. In the later years, SRK himself has joked on it a number of times for not being able to enter the stadium when his team is playing. But it was more than just a joke, especially when he was tagged as someone who broke in drunk! It all unfolded on May 16, 2012, after KKR defeated Mumbai Indians at Wankhede. The post-match celebrations took an ugly turn when SRK got into a verbal spat with security officials. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) accused him of misbehaving, abusing officials, and attempting to enter the field without authorization. Reports claimed that SRK, visibly furious, confronted a security guard for allegedly manhandling a group of children, which included his own. Eyewitnesses described him as agitated, his voice echoing across the stands. MCA officials lodged a formal complaint at the Marine Drive police station, citing misconduct. Then-MCA president, aka former Chief Minister of Mumbai, Vilasrao Deshmukh defended the decision to impose a ban, stating, “If rules are violated, action will be taken. It does not depend who the individual is. It’s a message to everyone, whosoever he or she may be, that stern action will be taken if there is any misbehavior. How can he go inside the ground without proper accreditation? Even I can’t go inside the ground if not invited for presentation ceremony." SRK, never one to stay silent, held a press conference vehemently denying the accusation. In a confession in the show "Aap ki Adalat," he accepted it as one of his impulsive actions, but it came after some disrespect related to his religion. He said, "I was very angry and upset. My kids were there and I thought someone… Maybe they had a rule, that hatao yaha se. I told him, these are our kids and we are taking them. I just said this. There was a person there who said a word which I, as a Delhi person, felt like it was an abusive word. Even though the same word in Marathi is also rude. Thoda sa religious, galat tha woh (It was religious, it was wrong). I then lost my cool, main pagal hogaya and I went to hit him." Despite imposing a five-year ban on SRK, it was withdrawn after two years, that is, in 2025. The MCA lifted the ban, likely acknowledging the time passed and tensions easing.
