Sanju Samson has cleared his fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, paving the way for his return as Rajasthan Royals' full-time captain. The star wicketkeeper-batter, who suffered a finger injury during the T20I series against England earlier this year, was previously unable to don the gloves. Now, with the medical green light, he will reclaim his leadership role from interim captain Riyan Parag. Samson had opted out of wicketkeeping in the first three matches of IPL 2025, participating only as a specialist batter. Dhruv Jurel stepped in behind the stumps while Parag took charge as captain. Despite limited involvement, Samson's presence bolstered RR's batting lineup. His performances included a valiant 66 in the season opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad, followed by scores of 13 and 20 in subsequent matches. However, his full-fledged return to duty is expected to provide RR with much-needed stability. The Rajasthan-based franchise had a rocky start to their campaign. They fell short against Hyderabad in a high-scoring clash and then suffered a loss to Kolkata Knight Riders at their temporary home ground in Guwahati. However, RR bounced back with an emphatic win over Chennai Super Kings, with Parag earning praise for his captaincy. Now, with Samson back at the helm, the Royals hope to build momentum in the tournament. Rajasthan's media statement reads, "Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has received clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to resume wicketkeeping duties following a period of recovery. The clearance comes after a thorough assessment of his fitness by the NCA medical team." The statement further added, "With this positive development, Samson will return to his full leadership role and resume captaincy from the team's next match against the Punjab Kings. The franchise is encouraged by Samson's progress and looks forward to having him back in action behind the stumps and leading the side." RR's think tank is optimistic about the impact of Samson’s return. His leadership, combined with his presence behind the stumps, is expected to provide greater tactical depth. The 2008 champions are eager to regain their footing in IPL 2025, and Samson's comeback could be the spark they need. Meanwhile, Rajasthan will play against Punjab Kings on April 5, at Mullanpur.
