There has been no doubt that Rohit Sharma has been one of the favourites for Sourav Ganguly, and yet again the former captain backed Sharma as the captain of the team amidst the captaincy dilemma. Presently, the 37-year-old batter has been under scrutiny regarding his captaincy responsibilities, if not retirement, due to his ongoing form, as well as a smooth transition from now to the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, Ganguly, who had earlier served as a BCCI President as well, is not supporting the idea of sacking Rohit from captaincy. Not only that, he does not want any change in the team from the 2023 ODI World Cup, as they have been a dominant force since then to the ongoing Champions Trophy. On Saturday, Ganguly said, "Why is there talk of Rohit Sharma's retirement? Why is this even a question? He won the World Cup just a few months ago. I don't know what the selectors are thinking, but Rohit is playing very well. India is far better than New Zealand. India played in the 2023 World Cup finals, won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and they are still unbeaten in this Champions Trophy. The same team will play." He also claimed India has an upper hand in the tournament, considering the form of the batters and the bowling line-up they have. But simultaneously, he is not brushing away New Zealand's chance to clinch yet another Champions Trophy title. The decision came when the selection board under Chetan Sharma's leadership decided to sack Virat Kohli from the T20 leadership. And after the away Test defeat against South Africa, Kohli stepped down from Test captaincy, leaving it to Rohit Sharma. Since then, he has led India to the finals of the 2023 World Cup and 2023 World Test Championship. In 2024, he won the T20 World Cup jointly hosted by the United States and West Indies. Today, on March 9, India will play against New Zealand in Dubai for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final. And in case he wins, Rohit will be the third captain to win the title after Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni
