In a historic move, Saudi Arabia has entered the cricketing world officially. Following months of rumors regarding the nation's increasing fascination with the game, Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF) has joined hands with the ILT20, clearing the way for games to be held in the Kingdom. The agreement is not exclusive to men's cricket. Importantly, there are also intentions to have women's matches take place in Saudi Arabia, a sight few have witnessed in the kingdom before. The partnership is a signpost moment in the growth of cricket throughout the Gulf and another piece of the puzzle in Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 sporting ambitions. A Game-Changing Partnership The alliance will have ILT20 collaborate with SACF and its business entity, Cricket Investment Company (CIC), to further expand the sport of cricket in Saudi Arabia. From the new season that begins on December 2, the agreement will enhance cricket infrastructure and player opportunities in the Kingdom. The UAE league announced: "SACF has sanctioned and licensed the DP World ILT20 as an official T20 league (men and women) to host matches within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as part of the forthcoming seasons. The milestone serves as another important step in ILT20's efforts to expand and enrich cricket across the Gulf region." A second big news is that Saudi Arabian players will have a direct route to ILT20. In fact, at the Player Auction for Season 4 on October 1, each franchise has to select a minimum of one Saudi player. ILT20 games will also be played on Saudi ground in the coming years. This collaboration reflects our commitment to developing cricket in the country and providing our players with opportunities to grow and succeed on an international stage. It also provides a platform for fan engagement within the Kingdom and opens up further avenues for developing the game across infrastructure and tourism." Khalid Al Zarooni, ILT20 Chairman, said: "We are very proud to announce our partnership with the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation. Saudi Arabia is a key part of the Gulf region, and its commitment to developing cricket is inspiring. This partnership is built on our shared vision of growing the game beyond borders." ILT20 CEO David White expressed the same sentiment: "This is a significant step in our vision to grow the game across the Gulf region… With Saudi Arabia's dynamic growth in sport and entertainment, this partnership provides a tremendous opportunity for Saudi cricketers to develop" What's Next? From next year, a development tournament will also be held in Saudi Arabia to provide local talent an opportunity to compete and secure positions in the main ILT20. With this tie-up, cricket might soon form an integral part of Saudi Arabia's sporting calendar.
