Samju Samson, the RR captain in Rajasthan Royals, walked off the field retired hurt during Match 32 of IPL 2025 against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, April 16, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the capital of India. He felt some discomfort in his rib cage during their run chase. In the final over of the powerplay, things looked uncomfortable for Samson. On the third ball from Vipraj Nigam, he attempted a lofted shot but missed entirely, while the cameras were on him grimacing in pain. The team physiotherapist rushed in to assess him, concentrating mainly on the left side of his ribs. After an extended stoppage in play, Samson took medication and continued to bat. But he seemed to be struggling again after just one more delivery, this time in the process of facing another attacking shot. Samson walked back to the dugout, knowing that he couldn't go on anymore. He made 31 runs in a fast 19 balls with two boundaries and three sixes. Riyan Parag walked in but failed to contribute much, getting out for only 8. Fans and the RR camp were worried when Samson left so suddenly. Still, a sigh of relief came as he gave a positive update after a heavy loss to Delhi. Although there were fears of a serious injury, Samson later made it clear that it wasn't as serious as it had looked, and clarity would come in the next 24 hours. This year, he batted against England in the fifth T20I at Wankhede Stadium when a painful blow on the finger by Jofra Archer put him out of action for Kerala's Ranji Trophy matches. He had a surgery for a fractured right index finger later. The recovery has meant that Samson started IPL 2025 as a pure batsman and captained by Riyan Parag for the first three matches with Dhruv Jurel keeping wickets. Nevertheless, Samson has looked set this season with respect to batting post-injury. The right-handed batsman has so far amassed 224 runs in seven games at an average of 37.33 and with a very respectable strike rate of 143.58. His best effort was a knock of 66 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Rajasthan Royals will now host Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 19 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. In the event of Samson's fitness not arriving in time, it is most likely that Parag would lead the band yet again.
