Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan Royals, was fined for ₹24 lakhs after his team restrained from maintaining an over rate throughout the IPL 2025 match against Gujarat Titans held today. It was quite a tough outing for RR as they were thoroughly outplayed by GT and lost the match by 58 runs. The fine was imposed on Samson under the IPL Code of Conduct since this was the second slow over-rate offense by RR this season. Earlier during this tournament, Riyan Parag, who captained in place of injured Samson against Chennai Super Kings, was fined ₹12 lakh, too. "The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser," An IPL media release read. Samson confessed that the team's mistakes cost them an important match against Gujarat Titans as he spoke after the match. The Royals, while chasing a huge target of 218, collapsed for 159 in 19.2 overs due to not being able to hold against Gujarat's sharp bowling performance. Speaking after the defeat, Samson pointed to lapses in execution with both bat and ball: " We gave away 15-20 runs extra in the bowling. When we needed momentum, we lost wickets. With Hettie [Shimron Hetmyer], sixes and fours kept coming. But I lost my wicket and that's where we lost the game." Hitting 41 runs off 28 balls, hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes, Samson contributed a solid score. He added 48 runs with Riyan Parag for the 4th wicket that brought a temporary resurgence before disciplined bowling from Gujarat proved too strong. With this kind of assassination by Jofra Archer very early on, the ball drew a good start for RR, Samson said. Sanju added: "The way Jofra started was good, he picked up Shubman's wicket. Then we went off plan. We planned something but they executed something else. We will have to look at that tomorrow." By the end of the tournament, it will be important for RR to pull themselves together and identify the issues for a more competitive IPL.
