In a special and revealing video, Indian wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson gave a sneak peek into his mind by building his 'ideal batter' based on the characteristics of his team-mates as well as his coach. The exercise, published by Sony Sports Network, gave fans an interesting glimpse into the traits that he appreciates in contemporary cricket. Samson, who enjoyed a record-breaking stint as an opener in 2024, is warming the bench in the Asia Cup 2025, as Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma open the innings for India. Even after his recent failure with the short ball in England, his form at home has been spectacular, capped with a title victory for his side in the Kerala Cricket League. While building his ideal batter, Sanju Samson picked different traits from his teammates. For swagger, he turned to Hardik Pandya, saying, “Swagger has to be Hardik.” On Abhishek Sharma’s form, he added, “I love how Abhishek is swinging it at the moment.” When it came to power-hitting, Samson cheekily backed himself, stating, “Power hitting has to be me.” For range of shots, he admired Suryakumar Yadav, remarking, “I think the way he plays 360-degrees, I think that will be good.” His most surprising choice was Jasprit Bumrah for defence, explaining, “I do not see anyone defending nowadays. No one is doing it. Everyone is standing and hitting sixes.” Also Read | Asia Cup 2025: Pakistan Seeks Withdrawal After UAE Match Postponed Samson’s recent form and future prospects Following a run of inconsistency, Samson has rediscovered himself as an opener. In 2024, he amassed 487 runs in 17 T20I matches as an opener at an explosive strike rate of 171.47 with three centuries and one fifty. Three of these tons came in a period of mere five innings in the series against Bangladesh and South Africa. Even though his overseas stats are impressive, a short test with the short ball in England T20Is witnessed him struggling to score 51 runs from five innings. Nevertheless, he has just come back in resplendent form in the Kerala Cricket League, where he was in incredible shape. In the tournament, he scored 368 runs in five games at a record average of 73.60 and a strike rate of 186.80. He played a hundred and three half-centuries, in addition to hitting a total of 30 sixes, as his team Kochi Blue Tigers emerged victors. Despite all this good form, Samson has not had the chance to bat in the current Asia Cup, with him being positioned in the middle order as India decided to use the opening combination of Abhishek and Gill. With India already qualifying for the Super Four round, supporters are keenly waiting to see whether he will have any opportunity to demonstrate his 'perfect batter' skills on the ground.
