Sai Sudarshan's ambition to play Test cricket for India was finally realized at Headingley, Leeds, on the first day of the England tour. But his first innings didn't turn out the way he would have expected. Walking in at three after the opener KL Rahul's departure, Sudarshan had a brief stay in the middle, lasting a mere three balls before being caught out for a duck. England skipper Ben Stokes followed a smart move, slamming into the pads with a full leg-side field that had a leg slip and leg gully. On his third ball, Sudarshan attempted to glance a ball down the leg side but got a faint touch instead. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith took the catch. It was an underwhelming beginning for the young left-arm batter, who has been in good shape in domestic cricket. He will now be hoping to come back with a bang in the second innings. Rahul negotiated a difficult pitch that was offering swing and seam. The duo played with great discipline, leaving well and smashing loose balls. Jaiswal played naturally beautifully and Rahul looked serene, playing several beautiful cover drives. The opening partnership went past fifty, at a fast pace, to harass the English bowlers who could not create any genuine chances. Just as India looked set to overwhelm the session, England struck back. Brydon Carse, perceiving opportunity, tempted Rahul into a body-less drive a meaty edge going safely to first slip. Next, in the last over before lunch, debutant Sai Sudharsan, who had been pushed to No. 3, was dismissed by a cleverly conceived leg-side trap from Ben Stokes. Attempting to look a delivery down to fine leg, he feathered it to the keeper, departing for a duck. From 84/0 to 92/2, England fought back late, leaving the game tantalizingly balanced at lunch.
