When Rishabh Pant stepped out to bat with a broken right toe on Day 2, it was one of the greatest embodiment of grit and determination towards the sport by today's generation. The left-handed batsman had stepped in to bat at No. 6 when India lost their fourth wicket on the first day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. Trying to play a cunning reverse sweep, Pant was struck on the right foot, and had to limp back retired hurt on 37. The 27-year-old was out of the fifth Test, and his presence on the field definitely was not occurring. To everyone's astonishment, though, he came onto the field after Shardul Thakur's wicket. Referred to as the God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar was in awe of the moment of determination shown by Pant to play for the team despite finding trouble to do so. But Pant was able to strike a couple of boundaries in his inning that carried India beyond the 350-run mark in the first innings. The wicket-keeper batter had to return for a gritty 54 off merely 75 deliveries, courtesy off a pearler from Jofra Archer. During his second phase of stay at the crease, Pant contributed 17 runs with the bat, and formed a tiny but vital partnership along with Washington Sundar (27), which could turn out to be invaluable in the situation as the match progresses. India tallied 358 on the board, and Sai Sudharsan was the highest scorer with his 61-run inning. Due to the contribution of Pant, the Indian pacers will have much to showcase to hold back the opponents.
