There has always been a sort of mystery around the decision when the Indian management decided to promote Mahendra Singh Dhoni over the in-form Yuvraj Singh during the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 against Sri Lanka. But now, the legendary Indian batter, Sachin Tendulkar, has shed some light on why the decision was taken, citing two crucial reasons. Tendulkar then responded to a fan’s question, who curiously asked why Gary Kirsten (head coach of the Indian team then) promoted MS Dhoni over Yuvraj Singh. Tendulkar replied: “There were 2 reasons. The left-right batting combination would have upset the two off-spinners; also, Muralitharan had played for CSK (from 2008-2010) and MS had played with him for 3 seasons in the nets.” This decision actually favoured the Indian team. While chasing the target of 275, India were struggling with 114 for 3 after Virat was dismissed for just 35 runs. It was the moment when MS Dhoni was promoted to tackle the sharp strategies of the Lankan spinners. Dhoni formed a match-winning partnership with Gautam Gambhir and remained unbeaten on 91 runs off just 79 deliveries, and won the Player of the Match award for his innings. This was a special moment for Sachin Tendulkar, winning his first ODI World Cup on his final appearance. It was the brilliant team efforts that sealed the trophy after ending the 28-year-long trophy drought. Furthermore, another fan asked about his favourite innings of his career. Sachin took no time in replying and revealed that he has had many great innings in his life, but he considers the century he scored against England in the Chennai Test of 2008 to be the most meaningful for him.
