Ruturaj Gaikwad, the designated captain for Chennai Super Kings, has been ruled out for the rest of the league. Rutu is currently battling an elbow injury. With this, MS Dhoni, the former IPL-winning skipper for the team, is likely to get the crown back. On Thursday, April 10 in the pre-match press conference, Stephen Fleming, CSK's head coach, addressed the issue before heading into the match against Kolkata Knight Riders. šØ News šØš£ #CSK Head Coach Stephen Fleming announces MS Dhoni's return to captaincy as Ruturaj Gaikwad is ruled out of #TATAIPL 2025 due to an injury. pic.twitter.com/Far8uAleam — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) April 10, 2025 Ruturaj's elbow issue has been a tingling cause since their last outing against Punjab Kings, where they lost by 18 runs at Mullanpur. He was supposed to miss that match as well, but the scans were not in hand then. Rutu succumbed to the injury during their match against Rajasthan Royals when the ball from Tushar Deshpande sneaked in to his elbow. Even with that, he played against Delhi and Punjab. But with the scans in hand, the fracture is prominent. And CSK has decided to move forward, leaving behind top run-getter in three of the last four seasons. Well, in that case, it is him as the obvious choice replacing Rutu. Thus, at 43, MS Dhoni is set to resume captaincy duties for Chennai Super Kings, returning to a role he has held for most of the franchise's decorated journey. He had earlier passed the baton to Ravindra Jadeja in 2022, only to reassume control midway through a difficult season. Ahead of IPL 2024, Dhoni once again stepped aside, but with CSK’s 2025 campaign struggling, he’s back in charge to steer the ship. Under his captaincy, Chennai secured five IPL championships (in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023) and added two Champions League T20 titles to their cabinet. CSK’s consistency under Dhoni is unmatched, having missed the playoffs only twice—in 2020 and 2022—and reaching the finals 10 times, including a remarkable streak from 2010 to 2013.
