In a big update, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad got a late call-up of sorts to the India A squad as an injury stand-in. On Sunday, May 31, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed via its social media pages that Gaikwad will link up with the India A team for the coming tri-series in Sri Lanka, it starts June 9. Gaikwad is stepping in for the injured Riyan Parag, who has been ruled out of the tournament after picking up a hamstring issue. The CSK skipper will also become the vice-captain under Tilak Varma, because Parag was initially penciled in as the deputy for that role. 🚨 News 🚨Ruturaj Gaikwad added to India A squad for tri-series in Sri Lanka as a replacement for injured Riyan Parag.Details 🔽 https://t.co/COTmObu7Sg — BCCI (@BCCI) May 31, 2026 India A Updated Squad For Sri Lanka Series: Updated India A squad for tri-series: Tilak Varma (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vice-captain), Priyansh Arya, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ayush Badoni, Nishant Sindhu, Suryansh Shedge, Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Kumar Kushagra (WK), Vipraj Nigam, Yash Thakur, Yudhvir Singh, Anshul Kamboj, Arshad Khan, Anukul Roy Riyan Parag Continued IPL 2026 With Injury: Parag first started feeling something off during the opening portion of IPL 2026. During Rajasthan Royals versus Delhi Capitals, RR’s captain ran into a hamstring strain, and had to walk off the field in the middle of the match. The right-handed batter missed a few matches ,because of the injury. Still he came back to the playing XI even though he was not exactly fully fit, with Rajasthan Royals trying to grab a place in the playoffs. The call did work, more or less, for Rajasthan because they booked their playoff spot ,and beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator. After that though, the whole campaign got stuck in Qualifier 2 after they lost to Gujarat Titans. Curiously , both Parag and Gaikwad went through rather disappointing IPL seasons. Parag put together 308 runs in 14 innings at an average of 23.69, with a strike rate that sat at 157. Gaikwad, meanwhile, also struggled , especially while leading CSK. He managed 337 runs in 14 innings at an average of 28.08. That sort of uneven showing was a big factor behind Chennai Super Kings missing out on the playoffs for a third season in a row. Ex-Indian drops satire before IPL 2026 Final India recently announce d its 15-member ODI squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan ,and honestly one of the more noticeable bits was Gaikwad’s omission. That choice sort of made people raise an eyebrow, because he was in India’s prior ODI series vs South Africa, and he even made a century in the second ODI. Because of that, the upcoming India A assignment feels like a useful doorway for the CSK captain to work his way back into the national group. The last time Gaikwad turned up for India A was against South Africa A, where he managed 210 runs across three innings, including a century and a half-century. Gaikwad is expected to slide into the India A squad pretty soon, and the team is set to travel to Sri Lanka in the coming days after the IPL ends.
