The puzzle surrounding the opening slot for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has finally been pieced together. With several options on the table, especially after the much-anticipated arrival of Sanju Samson in the yellow jersey, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has revealed the opening pair ahead of IPL 2026. After a year filled with constant changes at the top, the five-time champions have settled on a new opening duo for IPL 2026. While Samson was always expected to take the lead, Gaikwad is stepping back into his favorite position. He confirmed during the captains’ meeting in Mumbai that he’ll be returning to the top of the order, teaming up with the newly added Samson. CSK Looks to Top-Order Stability with Gaikwad-Samson Pair CSK faced challenges in finding stability at the top during IPL 2025. This situation persisted until Ayush Mhatre stepped in as a replacement for Gaikwad, who was sidelined due to an injury. Samson’s role at the top comes after a stellar performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, where he delivered three remarkable innings that essentially earned him the Player of the Tournament award. He has primarily opened the innings throughout his IPL career with the Rajasthan Royals, although he shifted to No. 3 last season to make room for Vaibhav Suryavanshi. CSK had several options available, including Ayush Mhatre and Sarfaraz Khan, but the management has opted for a more stable and proven combination to kick off the campaign.
