As soon as the franchises packed their bags from Abu Dhabi after the IPL 2026 mini-auction in December 2025, most thought that they had put together title-winning teams. While big-money signings got the limelight, things have not looked so bright for those after five months. Out of top 10 costliest buys in the IPL 2026 Auction, only two players-Jason Holder and Josh Inglis-gave a positive return on their respective purchase prices. Holder Leads the Way Among the Most Expensive Buys Jason Holder was the most successful signing among the top 10 most expensive buys, as the Gujarat Titans all-rounder who was purchased for Rs 7 crore produced a value of Rs 11.98 crore. The West Indian went on to pick up 17 wickets in 10 games while also conceding at a rate of 7.54 economy in a season where bowlers had it tough on the high-scoring tracks. His performances brought control and flexibility for Gujarat in crucial stages of the game. Josh Inglis was the only other player in the list to yield positive returns, with him joining Lucknow Super Giants for just the business end of the season and scoring 262 runs at an average of 52.4 with an economy rate of 8.59 in 5 games. His performances which saw him score 13, 85, 36, 60 and 72 left the cricket lovers wondering how their team’s fortunes would have panned out if Inglis had played for the entire season. Of the top 10 most expensive buys, Green returned with below par numbers, 322 runs and 7 wickets in the tournament. However, even with the value generated from Green estimated at around 12.71 crore, there was a gap of 12.49 crore, owing to his enormous auction price. In addition, with his initial not being clear to bowl, his participation, like KKR's team balance was a concern throughout the season. With Ravis Bishnoi and Venkatesh Iyer coming close to the price that was paid, both of them delivered decent performances. CSK's Uncapped Bets and Other Costly Misses While buying uncapped players Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer at 14.20 crore each was record-breaking from CSK, none of them proved to be fruitful for their side. Prashant Veer scored just 90 runs in 5 innings at a strike rate of just below 135, Kartik had a better tournament as the 20-year-old amassed 295 runs in 11 innings with the help of two fifties. In other expensive purchases, Matheesha Pathirana, Liam Livingstone and Auqib Nabi Dar barely delivered, causing a worry for their side in the cash-rich league. Clearly, the IPL 2026, has been another chapter where more money isn't necessarily equal to more returns at the auction table. The most effective buy always had a planned role and played it throughout the tournament.
