Former India opener Virender Sehwag has heaped praise on Rohit Sharma, calling him one of the best captains India has ever had. Sehwag particularly applauded Rohit's leadership and communication skills, which played an important role in India's success in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy. Under Rohit’s captaincy, India defeated New Zealand in the final to lift the trophy. This marks India’s second ICC title in the past nine months, having previously won the T20 World Cup last year. Additionally, the team reached the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup under his leadership. Sehwag, who played a key role in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup victories, believes that Rohit's ability to communicate effectively with his players sets him apart. While speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag opened up on how Rohit’s tactical decisions and clear communication have been instrumental in India’s recent successes. “We underrate his (Rohit’s) captaincy, but after these two trophies, he became the second (Indian) captain after Dhoni to win multiple ICC titles. The way the captain has used his bowlers, the way he has handled the team, the way he has guided the team, and whatever communication he does, he does it very clearly," Sehwag said. Sehwag also highlighted how Rohit made tough selection calls, such as playing Harshit Rana ahead of Arshdeep Singh and later bringing in Varun Chakravarthy. He credited Rohit's ability to clearly convey his decisions to the team as a crucial factor in his success. "Playing Harshit Rana first ahead of Arshdeep Singh or bringing in Varun Chakravarthy in place of Harshit Rana, he has communicated well with his players, which was important. That’s why Rohit Sharma is a better captain,” Sehwag added. While Rohit might not have scored big in every match, his quick starts in the powerplay have helped set the tone for India’s innings. Notably, India remained unbeaten throughout the Champions Trophy. In the final, he delivered a match-winning half-century, earning him the Player of the Match award. “He thinks less about himself, more about his team, his teammates. He makes them comfortable. He realises that if a player has insecurity, then his performance will not come. That’s why he doesn’t let anyone feel insecure in that team. He takes everyone with him. This is the need for a better captain and leader. And Rohit Sharma is doing it very well,” Sehwag stated. Following their Champions Trophy triumph, Indian players will now turn their focus to the Indian Premier League (IPL). India's next international assignment is in June, when they will face England in a five-match Test series.
