India has had 36 different Test captains since the nation made its Test debut in 1932 under Col CK Nayudu. In 93 years, only 17 players have captained India in 10 or more matches; Rohit Sharma is one of that elite group. On May 7, Rohit officially announced his retirement from Test captaincy and from Test cricket in general. His tenure as captain may not have been gilded with major accomplishments, but his win percentage clearly puts him among India's most successful Test captains. Rohit finished his Test captaincy career with a 50% win percentage, behind only Virat Kohli. Kohli won 40 Test matches (the most by an Indian captain) and had a win rate of 58.82%. Rohit didn't initially want to be the captain but he decided to step up to be captain after Virat Kohli stepped down and Sourav Ganguly, then BCCI President, told him to accept the role. Rohit started very well with India, taking them to four straight Test victories. In 2024 he went beyond this and raised the bar with a six-match winning streak. However, it didn’t carry, as a skipper he went on to be the only Indian captain to be white washed at home. Rohit ended his captaincy and Test career with five losses in his last six matches.
