Rohit Sharma continues to be in a struggling phase, and this time, Mumbai Indians cannot be blamed. Once upon a time, he was a game-winning opener; today, he is faltering for both MI and India. Rohit started IPL 2025 with a pair of scores of 0 and 4 and then mustered 13 off 12-steady balls against KKR. With the burden of captaincy off and with a string of failures, will MI take the call to drop their five-time title-winning star? Monday's match saw glimpses of his struggle. He hit a signature six off Harshit Rana but was completely at sea against Varun Chakaravorthy. Out of his twelve balls, six were dot balls, a sign that he is clearly out of sorts. Since having scored a century ages ago against the Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede, Rohit's scores read: 36, 6, 8, 4, 11,19,68,0,8 and 13. With five single-digit dismissals in his last ten innings, the big question is, how long will MI stick with him before opting for a change? But at MI, he can't take that call himself without the captaincy. Maybe he could think about the 2013 IPL when Ricky Ponting actually rested himself from playing due to a dip in form. His average in IPLs becomes a tedious number-24.66 scored in 72 innings, during which he has managed only seven fifties and a single hundred. He is supposed to have 21 scores in single digits, 40 scores below 30, and six ducks. Such statistics do not bode well for someone at the top of the order. His strike rate also keeps sliding down to 131.65, well below his average for the IPL career. It is nothing wrong to question his place in the team as Michael Vaughan, the former England captain has asked. Though leading India to T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy wins, his form is a worrying factor as India heads for a five-Test series in England after IPL 2025. Out of those 15 innings, 14 times he has failed to cross the thirty mark. Against the backdrop of competition provided by Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Sarfaraz Khan, and Dhruv Jurel, it will be a tough one for the selectors. So, can they justify his inclusion in the Test squad, leave alone captaincy?
