Viv Richards is one of the most legendary batters in cricket. He was the original Master Blaster—an innovator in ODI cricket. Back in 1984, long before huge centuries became the almost norm, Richards scored 184 against England. The record stood as the highest individual score by a West Indian until Chris Gayle broke it in 2015 with a double century. His presence was such that sides often felt his cheap dismissal was the route to victory. Kapil Dev's catch in the 1983 World Cup final became iconic not because it was a spectacular catch but because it was Richards he dismissed. Even 40 years down the line, Richards remains the West Indies' second and third highest individual scores in ODIs. In his last few years one more large hundred was to come his way — 181 against Sri Lanka in the 1987 World Cup. When Richards shows approval for a player, that says much about a player's greatness. Take Rohit Sharma for example. The lconic Indian skipper has three double-centuries in ODIs, most centuries in a World Cup, most sixes in international cricket, and highest score in ODIs to his incredible list of achievements. Yet, it was Rohit Sharma's performance against Australia in the T20 World Cup Super Eight game that left Viv Richards stunned. Rohit gave a blistering 92 off 41 balls, one of the most brutal against Australia, at the St. Lucia cricket stadium where Richards grew up, to earn applause from Richards himself. On the '2 Sloggers' podcast, veteran sports journalist Vimal Kumar said: "I always knew that if they can beat Australia, no team will be able to stop them. You look at that game against Australia, it was as if Rohit Sharma took it personally. That is the home ground of Viv Richards, and someone told me that when he was watching the match, he was in awe. To have someone like Viv Richards in awe even for half an hour, it means your life is made. If Viv Richards is watching the match and you make him clap, there is nothing like it." Hell-bent on avenging India's loss to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final, Rohit took it out on that match. He made Mitchell Starc his victim, taking away 29 runs off an over, four sixes included, and added a fifth off the next over. It was an innings of eight sixes by Rohit, clinched by the pain of November 19, arguably as one of the best ever in the history of the T20 World Cup, which helped eliminate Australia from this edition. After one of the matches, Richards once visited the Indian dressing room and shook their hands, saying, "If there's one team I want to see winning this World Cup after the West Indies, it's you guys," a wish which Team India eventually fulfilled.
