ormer India captain Rohit Sharma has finally shared the reason behind his visible frustration in the dressing room during the 2023 Test series against Australia. The moment went viral as Rohit was seen giving instructions to wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, who then delivered a message to the batsmen during a break. This happened amid a slow-scoring partnership between Cheteshwar Pujara and Axar Patel. Shortly after, Pujara struck a rare six off Australian spinner Nathan Lyon. Speaking at the launch of The Diary of a Cricketer’s Wife, written by Pujara’s wife Puja, Rohit explained the situation. He said, “We wanted to get Nathan Lyon off the track a little bit. We wanted to get some runs quickly. We probably were looking at declaring or something. We were like... ‘no, something needs to change now. Maybe, a message would do good.’ The entire time, he was bowling with mid-on up. I was like, he's not that good of a bowler to keep mid-on up. I know it was a challenge, the pitch was turning square but we needed to get runs quickly. So I had to send Ishan.” Read also: Watch: No Fans as Team India Lands in UK Without Kohli-Rohit Rohit aimed to speed up against Hazlewood The Test itself was a low-scoring affair, with Australia winning by nine wickets. India was bowled out for 109 in the first innings and managed 134 in the second. Pujara top-scored with 59 runs off 142 balls. Australia scored 197 in their first innings and easily chased the target of 76 runs. However, Rohit also admitted that such messages often go unheard by the batsmen. He added, “It's one thing that we send messages. The most important thing is… sometimes what batters do is whenever someone comes out with a message, we know exactly why he's there. So I would stop him there only!” Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket last month, ending a career that began in 2013 with a century against the West Indies. Cheteshwar Pujara remains active but has not played since the 2023 World Test Championship final. Soon after Rohit’s retirement, Virat Kohli also announced his exit from Test cricket, marking a significant transition for India’s batting lineup.
