Indian opener Rohit Sharma has formally retired from Test cricket and is hinting at his future in international cricket. After retiring from T20Is after India's 2024 T20 World Cup victory, Rohit is looking to win the 2027 ODI World Cup. He announced his Test retirement on May 7, via Instagram, during this the IPL season. The 38-year-old stated he would continue to play One Day Internationals, and is now only focusing on the 50-over format. During an interview with journalist Vimal Kumar, Rohit reminisced about India’s painful defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Despite being unbeaten in the tournament, India lost to Australia and failed to win the title. Rohit has officially retired from his T20I and Test careers and is now focused on the 2027 ODI World Cup set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. However, he has yet to achieve his goal of winning the World Test Championship despite his team reaching the final in 2023. Rohit wasn’t on the 2011 World Cup-winning team, but he played important roles in the 2015, 2019 and 2023 World Cups. In 2023, Rohit led an unbeatable Indian team to the final before they lost to Australia. The batter from Mumbai has been phenomenal in ODIs. He has scored a whopping 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs at an average of 48.77 runs, having 32 hundreds and three double hundreds on his run sheet. Rohit's 264 run haul's is still the highest score recorded in ODIs. He is currently part of the Mumbai Indians playing in IPL 2025 and has been solid this season, with 300 runs in 11 matches at an average of 30.00, blazing at a strike rate of 152.28, with three fifties to his name.
