In a controversy that has taken Indian cricket by surprise, it is said that India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, has filed a complaint against cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The complaint reportedly came after Gavaskar’s nonstop harsh criticisms on Rohit's performances during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The tension started before the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, especially when Sharma decided to skip the first Test in Perth owing to the birth of his second child. Despite understanding the personal nature of his absence, Sunil Gavaskar brought reference to his playing days and did not hold back. He suggested that if Sharma could not play the first match, he should step aside completely, allowing Jasprit Bumrah to take over as captain. Gavaskar’s criticisms only intensified after India won the first Test under Bumrah’s leadership. Rohit joined the squad for the second Test but struggled with the bat, scoring just 31 runs in three matches, adding more woes to the negativity. As India’s performance began to falter, Gavaskar continued to voice his concerns. Gavaskar, in turn, questioned Sharma’s future in Test cricket, remarking that the captain should retire if he is doubting his place in the team. This barrage of criticism reportedly took a toll on Sharma, leading him to file a complaint with the BCCI. A source revealed, "Rohit felt that it was not necessary for Sunil Gavaskar to criticize him in such a manner, which only added to the pressure. It reached a point where he was compelled to express his frustrations to the BCCI." Despite the ongoing challenges, Rohit Sharma is determined to bounce back. He returned to the Ranji Trophy circuit, representing Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir, where he scored 31 runs across two innings. Even if the first innings was a disheartening one, the second innings did show some vintage Rohit Sharma, but if that is enough for the captain to perform accordingly in the Champions Trophy is yet to be figured out.
