On February 23, at Dubai, a short inning of 20 runs has done for Rohit Sharma to enter the list of having 9000 ODI runs, along with great openers like Sachin Tendulkar and former captain Saurav Gangully. In the clash of clans between India and Pakistan, Rohit achieved this feat and became the third Indian opener to achieve 9000 ODI runs. A lower middle order batter, Rohit Sharma, began opening the innings in 2011 but cemented his place in the role just before the 2013 Champions Trophy. Over the years, he has dominated as an opener, delivering standout performances in major tournaments. His campaigns in the 2019 and 2023 World Cups were particularly remarkable. In the 2019 version, Rohit smashed a record number of 5 centuries, and in the 2023 edition, he played a crucial role in setting the tempo for India in multiple matches, amassing 597 runs in the tournament. Virat Kohli shines yet again against Pakistan India’s captain remains a key player in the ongoing Champions Trophy and contributed 41 runs in the opening match against Bangladesh. With his performance on Sunday, Rohit Sharma secured a place alongside legendary cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Chris Gayle on an elite list. In the match against Pakistan, Rohit failed to recapitulate his innings as Shaheen Shah Afridi crushed his bailes with a well-planned yorker while he was at 20. The vice captain, Shubman Gill, read the pitch and played accordingly, making a 69-run partnership with Virat Kohli, leading the base of the win. Despite getting a life from a dropped catch, he failed to convert his 40s into a half century, as Abrar Ahmed broke Gill's stumps at 46. A century from his side, he escalated the innings balances with singles and boundaries, having the in-form batter Shreyas Iyer. Iyer, too, got a life as Khushil Shah, unaware of the ball coming towards him, dropped an easy catch early in Iyer's inning. However, Iyer partnered with Kohli and gave good support by rotating strikes and giving the lead to his partner. With that too, Iyer completed his half century (56). Kohli has been awarded the man-of-the-match award, as he not stole his 51st ODi century but finished the match in style with a boundary. With the host Pakistan virtually been kicked out of the tournament, they yet have a match left, against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, on February 27. On the other hand, India will face New Zealand on March 2nd, in Dubai.
