The ongoing announcement of the BCCI latest central contracts would see Rohit Sharma remain India's Test captain. The experienced opener was last seen captaining India in the 4th Test against Australia, retaining his place in the elite Grade A+ category. While a formal announcement regarding his successor is yet to be made, indications point to Rohit leading the side during the coming Test season. The examination of the issues rumored about the shake-up would be strong after India's embarrassing defeat of 4-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This came close on the heels of yet another dismal outing against New Zealand. However, Rohit came up with the goods yet again by carrying India through the inevitable route to victory in the Champions Trophy this March, restoring a little faith in his leadership. Rohit looked a little poorly as a batter in the second half of 2024. He endured a run of bad form in the Tests against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia. He had a promising start to the year against England but dipped considerably later in the year that he was eventually compelled to sit out the 5th Test against Australia. Earlier in the year, reports suggested that selectors wanted Rohit to consider his Test future after the Champions Trophy. However, having led India to the title, he has now made the board and selectors want to support him for a longer haul. A source had comented the Indian Express earlier in March: “He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket.” Having once again secured a place in the top contract tier of BCCI for 2025/26, Rohit has retired from T20Is and is in Grade A+ along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. India's next big preoccupation will be a five-match Test series in England beginning in June.
