Rohit Sharma, the present Indian Men's Test team captain, has opted to take a leave on the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, which has spurred a lot of controversies. When critics like Sunil Gavaskar questioned his decision, the former Aussie captain Aaron Finch extended support to Rohit's decision, which has further earned respect from Rohit's wife Ritika Sajdeh. After the 0-3 historical whitewash in the 3-match home Test series against New Zealand, Rohit Sharma's captaincy came under speculation. In such a situation, Rohit asked for a leave in the highly anticipated BGT. Even though the cause is not certain, many are guessing it as his paternity leave, which Finch too directly mentioned in his quote. Read: Rohit Sharma: Family, Relationships & Personal Life Countering Gavaskar's criticisms, Finch said to ESPNCricinfo, "I disagree with Sunny on that totally. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian cricket team. If you need to stay at home because your wife is having a baby... that's such a beautiful moment... and you take all the time that you need in that regard." Ritika Sajdeh, Rohit's wife, reacted to the news with a salute emoji on social media. Struggling India with Rohit Sharma leaving, adds tension BGT, which presently is not just a duel, is now a do-or-die series for the team for their qualification in the World Test Championship final. This time, India is travelling with a young squad featuring names like Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy, and Sarfaraz Khan. Undoubtedly, India is in a sensitive situation prior to the Border Gavakar Trophy. India needs to win 4 of the five Tests to reach the final. The New Zealand Series gave two hopeful names: Rishabh Pant with the bat and Akash Deep with the ball. The interim Test captain, Jasprit Bumrah, is an usual ray of hope for the Indians. Mohammed Siraj was struggling with line too, which is a matter of tension. Sarafaraz Khan also failed to display his usual show on the field. On the other side, a celebrated name in the domestic arena, Abhimanyu Easwaran, failed in both the unofficial tests against Australia A. The only name that let India A give a fight was Dhruv Jurel. However, Jurel's spot in the playing XI in BGT is uncertain with Rishabh Pant in his red-hot form. Harshit too, hasn't played any tests before, and has just 12 first-class experience. Added, India denied to play the one practice match against India-A. In such a situation, Rohit's absence from batting will leave the majority of the batting responsibilities on the struggling Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. Shubman Gill, who has one away BGT series experience, will have Yashasvi Jaiswal guarding the top order in his debut BGT series. Judging the situation, Gavaskar, in an interview to JioCinema, stated, "We have been reading that Rohit Sharma will not play in the first Test, perhaps he will not play in the second as well. If this is the case, then I say that, right now, the Indian selection committee should say that 'if you have to rest, rest, if there are personal reasons then look at them. But if you are missing two-thirds of the matches then you should go for this tour only as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour.'" Even though Gavaskar's viewpoint has a base considering the team's situation, Finch's comment earned respect from the Sharma family. However, a report from TOI mentioned that Rohit will travel with the team in separate batches due to some logistical issues but may return due to personal causes.
