India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant will not be the Delhi Capitals' captain in the IPL for the 2025 season. As per a report from Times of India on October 17, all-rounder Axar Patel might take over from Pant, who was appointed Delhi Capitals' skipper back in 2021. TOI quoted a souce saying: "Yes, the Delhi Capitals could be looking for a new captain. There are chances that India allrounder Axar Patel may take over as the new captain, or the franchise could be eyeing someone who is captaincy material at the IPL auction (likely to take place overseas in mid-November).” The source added: "Pant, though, is set to be the franchise’s top retention. It’s just that the leadership group at DC feels that he’s better off without the pressures of captaincy." Rishabh Pant has been with the Delhi Capitals since 2016. He is the most capped player for the franchise and Delhi Capitals's highest run-scorer in the IPL. Pant took over as the captain following the ruling out of Shreyas Iyer for the 2021 season due to a shoulder injury sustained playing for India. He was retained before the 2022 mega auction for ₹16 crore. In 2022, Delhi again, with Pant as captain, finished at the fifth position in the points table. Pant suffered severe injuries in a road accident on December 30, 2022, and as a result, missed the whole season of 2023. He played as a captain in IPL 2024 and was the team's highest run-scorer. However, Delhi Capitals failed to make the playoffs once more. The team may try to create some magic by attempting to include the services of Shreyas Iyer for the next season. According to the reports, DC might make an attempt to bring back Shreyas Iyer if KKR releases him before the mega auction scheduled for the season 2025. Iyer had led Delhi Capitals to the IPL finals in the season 2020. He also led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title victory in 2024.
