Rishabh Pant created history on Day 1 of the first Test of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley, Leeds, on Friday (June 20). The Indian wicket-keeper batter scored a blistering half-century and remained unbeaten on 65 at the end of the day's play. India had reached a solid score of 359/3 with earlier centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. Pant's knock was particularly crucial considering he arrived in the series following an unsuccessful IPL 2025 season. People had questioned his form, but this innings reminded everyone why Pant is regarded as one of India's greatest match-winners in Tests. Now also a vice-captain, Pant delivered when India required him. Pant Joins 3000-Run Club, Breaks Sangakkara's Record In this innings, Pant achieved a special milestone - 3000 Test runs as a specialist wicket-keeper batter. He became only the second Indian after MS Dhoni to achieve this. Even more impressively, Pant did it in 76 innings, bettering Kumar Sangakkara's erstwhile record (78 innings) and becoming the quickest Asian to do so. Only Adam Gilchrist (63 innings) reached the mark faster. Pant Breaks Dhoni’s Record in SENA Nations Pant also created a gigantic record outside of India. He now holds the record for most Test runs by a foreign wicket-keeper in SENA nations (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). He surpassed MS Dhoni, who was holding the record for years. For example, Gilchrist’s runs in Australia are not included here. Pant has also scored four centuries in these countries - the most by any Asian wicket-keeper and second-most overall. He is now getting close to Dhoni’s record for most runs by a visiting keeper in England, and with one more big score, Pant could break that record too. He already has two Test centuries in England, more than any other visiting wicket-keeper.
