Rishabh Pant, who had suffered a foot injury on Wednesday (July 23) that will presumably keep him out of the game for six weeks, went out to bat for India in the first innings of the fourth Test against England in Manchester. Pant scored 54 runs from 75 balls, with three fours and two sixes, and established a number of records throughout his game. Pant's 54-run innings took his tally to 479 runs in the current series. This is now the highest runs by any wicketkeeper-batter in a Test series in England. Test cricket has been taking place in England since 1880, but Pant is the first wicketkeeper-batter in 141 years to have at least scored 475 runs in a single series in England. The last record was held by England's Alec Stewart with 464 runs in the 1998 series against South Africa. MS Dhoni and Farokh Engineer both scored four 50s in one series in their careers. Engineer, who has a stand in his honor at Old Trafford, accomplished the feat in the 1972-73 series versus England. Pant has now surpassed both with five 50+ scores in this series. Pant also has nine 50+ scores in red-ball matches in England, which is one more than Dhoni’s tally of eight.
