Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has suggested Indian Test captain Shubman Gill to think about moving down the order and batting at No. 4 during the upcoming five-match Test series against England, which will start on June 20. Gill has just guided Gujarat Titans (GT) to third position in the points table during the IPL 2025 season. Ponting feels that a change in batting position can ease the pressure on Gill, particularly with the burden of captaincy. With Indian legend Virat Kohli retiring, India are looking for a permanent No. 4 contender. Here is what Ricky Ponting said: "His white-ball form has been incredibly good. He's got a little bit of work to do, on his Test match batting. And that's never easy when you're a new captain, to have to worry about your batting to the degree that he's going to have to, it won't be easy for him," The ex-Australian skipper opined that if India prefers to open with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan, Gill might find a place at No. 4 to bring stability to the middle order. "If they go with (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan as openers, they need someone more experienced at No. 3 — maybe KL Rahul or Karun Nair. That would allow Shubman to bat at four. Once you grow into it, then you can move yourself back up to No. 3" Read also: 5000 cops vs 2.5L fans: Tragedy at RCB victory parade Ponting believed in Gill's leadership and felt the 25-year-old had the temperament to cope with pressure. He also identified a couple of areas Gill needs to work on, mainly his concentration when playing long innings. "He just seems the sort of guy that the extra responsibility wouldn’t faze too much. He’s got a really level head on his shoulders. He’s someone who’s going to be around Indian cricket for another 10 years,” Ponting conceded. I think it’s more his mental application. There’s nothing wrong technically. But sometimes, he might get ahead of himself or be a little lazy during an innings. You’ve got to be 100% committed for every ball, for six or seven hours of the day. That’s the challenge for Shubman" Ponting suggests No. 4 role could ease pressure on Gill As India readies to face a challenging Test test against England, Ricky Ponting's advice may come in handy for Shubman Gill. With increased responsibility as captain and the burdens of leading the team that come with it, shifting to No. 4 may aid Gill to find his space without the pressure of handling the new ball. His skill and temperament are well documented, and this subtle adjustment could yield huge dividends for India. With veterans such as Kohli missing, the team is in transition mode, and maintaining the right balance in the batting lineup will prove to be important if the team has to deliver in the next series.
