India's batting legend and ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, is said not to be playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The upcoming Australian series in October 2025 may be his last match in ODIs, putting a seal on a legendary career. Rohit, together with Virat Kohli, has been the regular member of Indian ODI cricket for more than a decade. The two have seen the team go through several tournaments, breaking batting records and performing in the biggest of games. Nevertheless, reports indicate that the Indian team management has turned its attention to developing younger players ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. The tour of Australia in October 2025 will include three ODIs on October 19, 23, and 25. Both Rohit and Kohli are reportedly likely to make official announcements regarding their ODI careers before the start of the series. If this comes true then it will be the last time that fans will see the Indian skipper in the 50-over cricket. Shubman Gill, India's already-established Test captain and newly appointed vice-captain in the Asia Cup team, has emerged as the front runner to become the ODI captain in Rohit's place. Rohit's ODI career included him playing in 273 games and making 11,168 runs at a rate of 48.76, with 32 tons and 58 fifties. His three hundred doubles in ODIs only made him one of the greatest batsmen of this format. His latest achievement was leading India to Champions Trophy title success in Dubai. Sunil Gavaskar, Indian legendary opening batsman, recently said that the duo won't be available for selection in the Indian squad for the 2027 ICC event. Here is what Gavaskar told Sports Today: "They have been massive performers in this format of the game. Again, the selection committee will probably be looking at the 2027 World Cup. They will be looking at 'will they be able to be in the team for the 2027 World Cup? Will they be able to make the kind of contributions they have been making?'. That will be the thought process of the selection committee. If the selection committee thinks 'yes, they can', then both of them will be there for that. No, I don't think they will be playing. I am being very honest. But, who knows, in the next year or so, if they strike a rich vein of form, and if they keep scoring hundreds and hundreds, even God can't drop them,"
