The Chennai Super Kings are reportedly set to sign 17-year-old Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Gaikwad has been ruled out of the remainder of the season due to an elbow injury. In his absence, CSK have reinstated MS Dhoni as the captain. According to a report by Cricbuzz, the franchise has now roped in Mhatre, who had gone unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction despite a base price of INR 30 lakh. The youngster recently took part in CSK’s mid-season trials and impressed the management. As per the report, he will join the squad in Mumbai in the coming days. CSK had also considered Gujarat’s Urvil Patel and out-of-favour India opener Prithvi Shaw, but ultimately zeroed in on Mhatre as Gaikwad’s replacement. After starting the season with a victory over the Mumbai Indians, CSK have slumped to five consecutive defeats. In their latest match, they managed only 103/9 against Kolkata Knight Riders, struggling in Gaikwad’s absence. They will return to action on Monday, April 14, when they face Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the team needs a strong comeback. Meanwhile, Ayush Mhatre is not expected to feature in CSK’s upcoming match against LSG but is likely to be available for selection in their away game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
