India and South Africa will contest the final ODI of the three-match series on Saturday in Vishakhapatnam. The series is locked 1-1 after India won the first match in Ranchi and then South Africa squared the series in Raipur. Both games were high-scoring and gave batters a good chance to make big runs. These matches also witnessed many records being broken by both sides. The 349/8 that India scored in the first match was the second-highest ODI score against South Africa; in the next match, they went even higher by making 358/5. With 359 runs chased down in ODIs, South Africa etched yet another record in the annals of history, equalling another highest chase by anyone against India. As the two sides flaunted their strong batting prowess, the final match is expected to garner many more runs and records. Milestones Awaiting Virat Kohli Virat Kohli has been in scintillating form through this series and has scored two centuries out of the two matches played so far. Now, he has his sights set towards breaking new records in the third ODI. Kohli can become the first Indian batter to achieve more than one streak of three consecutive centuries in ODIs. Currently, both Kohli and Rohit Sharma have achieved it once each. If Kohli scores one more century on Saturday, he will be the only Indian to achieve it twice. He also stands a chance to become the first player in the world to score four straight ODI centuries against South Africa, given the fact that he also scored a hundred against South Africa in their last meeting in an ODI during the 2023 Cricket World Cup. One more century will take him to a rare record no one has achieved before. If Rohit and Kohli put together another 100-run stand, they will move to second place for the most century stands in ODI cricket. They presently have 20 century partnerships, the same number as Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and TM Dilshan. The top spot is held by Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, who have 26. He needs 120 runs to go past Jacques Kallis and take the eighth spot on the list of the highest ODI run-scorers. Rohit is also just 62 runs away from completing 5,000 ODI runs in India. If he gets there, he will become only the third Indian batter to reach this mark after Sachin Tendulkar (6976) and Virat Kohli (6562). The ODI series level and multitude of records to be broken do promise a big contest for the final match in Vishakhapatnam. India will be looking forward to winning the series at home whereas South Africa, repeating its strong show, aims to challenge the hosts all over again.
