On June 10, shares of United Spirits increased by 3%, making this the highest in the last 5 months. This happened with rumors spreading that parent company Diageo might be selling its stake in the IPL 2025 winning team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The reports indicated Diageo was looking at a ₹17,000 crore valuation for the IPL team. The rise in stock price, however, soon cropped up. United Spirits quickly filed a notice with the stock exchange, denying the rumors and describing them as "speculative." They affirmed that there had been no discussions regarding the selling of any part of their stake in RCB. At the stock exchange, United Spirits said: "The company would like to clarify that aforesaid media reports are speculative in nature and it is not pursuing any such discussions." The speculation started gaining momentum after RCB bagged their very first IPL title this season. Since Diageo stepped in after the debt crisis faced by Vijay Mallya, many fans were curious if the company was now financing a sell of the team at a very high price. Adding to the rumors was a tragic incident at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. It was during the RCB victory parade when a stampede took place, claiming 11 lives and injuring over 50 others. This added to the criticism towards RCB, the police, and the organizers, and some began pondering about the franchise management and its future. After denying the rumors, the United Spirits stock started being buoyant, given the good quarter it had just ended. Net profits rose 74.7% to ₹421 crore. Revenues up by 8.9%, hitting ₹3,031 crore. The EBITDA reached ₹460 crore, up by a significant 37.7% from the previous, and with it came the announcement of a final dividend of ₹8 per share. Now the major question is, if Diageo is not willing to sell, why did the rumors come into existence? And, once having won their first-ever IPL Trophy, will RCB continue increasing in value and reputation? For now, United Spirits says, "There is no deal going on," but the IPL franchise and cricket franchise world is well-known for fast-changing plans.
