India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been given a rest for the three-match ODI series against Australia to be played from October 19. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar made it clear that since Axar Patel had already been picked, the team could not accommodate two left-arm spinners in the team. Some fans had wondered whether Jadeja was done with ODIs, but the old warhorse is very much an integral part of India's future plans. Clear Communication by Team Management Talking after Day 2 of the current Test series against West Indies, Jadeja stated that he had a constructive conversation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and new ODI skipper Shubman Gill, both of whom assured him of his spot in the side. Jadeja said: “See, this is not in my hands. I mean, I want to play the World Cup, of course, but at the end of the day, there’s some thinking from the team management, selectors, coach, and captain, why they didn’t keep me in this series." He added: "There must be some reason behind it. And they spoke to me, it’s not like I got a surprise when the team was announced, that I’m not there. So that’s a good thing, that the captain, selector, and coach spoke to me about what they were thinking and the reason behind it. So I’m happy about that." Jadeja also emphasized that he will continue to contribute whenever given an opportunity. Jadeja said: "But whenever the next opportunity comes, obviously, I’ll try to do what I’ve been doing all these years. And like you said about the major tournament, the World Cup, if I get a chance there, before that there are quite a few ODIs." The all-rounder added: "If I do well in those and get the opportunity, obviously it’ll be good for Indian cricket. And yes, winning the World Cup is everyone’s dream. Last time in the 50-over World Cup, we fell short by a little, so this time, if possible, we’ll try to finish what was left incomplete." While speaking about Jadeja omission, Agarkar explained: "Currently, taking two left-arm spinners to Australia is not possible. Jaddu is clearly in our scheme because of his quality, but there is competition for places. It is a short series, and we could carry only one left-arm spinner along with Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav." Jadeja has played 204 ODIs in which he has scored 2,806 runs and collected 231 wickets. In the recently concluded Champions Trophy, he picked five wickets in five matches with an economy of 4.35. India will play three ODIs against Australia on October 19, 23, and 25, and then five T20Is from October 29 to November 8.
