The departure of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli marks for India a new chapter in Test cricket. A new captain, perhaps Shubman Gill, will likely herald the transition in the coming days. It is somewhat justified to appoint a young captain for the long-term future of an Indian Test side. However, it is equally important that this young captain should be backed by an experienced vice-captain. With more than 80 Test matches to his credit, Jadeja is the most senior player of the side after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Even admitting him in the playing XI is mandatory; therefore, a structure built on a young captain with Jadeja as vice-captain appears to be most suitable. Test leadership is indeed tough, and it will be filled with challenges in the early days. That is when the wisdom of a senior would really come in handy. The selectors didn't consider Jasprit Bumrah as a vice-captain, so Jadeja was the most suitable option. According to the reports, Rishabh Pant might be one of the candidates, but that could be a call fraught with uncertainty. Both Pant and Gill have scarcely been around for long and that is why they have a lack of Test leadership experience. Jadeja is not yet the Indian captain in the longest format of the game. He captained Chennai Super Kings only for a short time in 2022 and left the role before the end of the season. Besides, back in the early part of the year, he refused to lead Saurashtra at the midway stage of the Ranji Trophy although he participated in a few games. He is a person who can help and show the right path to a young captain to overcome the difficulties of Test cricket.
