Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin opened up on his Test retirement, saying he wasn't playing enough in away tours which made him take the retirement call. The last few months saw a pool of Indian seniors putting their cap down, with Ash being one of them. Ashwin's retirement came suddenly during the Gabba's draw of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Series. He came with the India captain Rohit Sharma in the press conference and announced his retirement. Then also, he claimed that he was not being used. However, in the recent chat with Rahul Dravid, he explained that he was old and it's better to sit with his growing kids rather than sitting in the dressing room and not playing. In his chat show, Ashwin said, “I was pretty old, I must admit. But going on tours, and having to just sit out (a) lot more, eventually got to me. I mean, not in terms of not wanting to contribute to the team, but you’re thinking if I would rather be at home, spending time with children. They are also growing up, and what am I actually doing? So, I just felt like okay… In my head, I always decided that I would retire at 34-35. But just the fact that I could not play a lot in between." Since his debut in November 2011, he claimed 383 wickets in 65 home Tests and added 150 wickets in 40 matches abroad. He also bagged four wickets in the only neutral Test he played, which was the 2019-21 World Test Championship final against New Zealand in England. In December last year, Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. However, he stated that he would remain associated with the sport and could feature in leagues like the IPL and TNPL.
